LFoSS launched our pamphlet ‘Sure Start, Sure Future’ in 2013. It was a collection of ideas about how to rebuild Sure Start following blistering Tory cuts, but the vision was predicated on a Labour Government in 2015.
Unfortunately, the immediate challenge we now face is not to rebuild Sure Start – but to save it from more cuts and closures.
Over the last 5 years many local authorities have tried to protect Sure Start funding, whilst staff have taken on extra workload and used their creativity to keep frontline services running. However, many are unable to see how they will absorb another round of budget cuts.
Cuts that will result in a funding fall of £92million per year for children’s centres if they continue on the same scale over the next five years.
It is at this time that we must pull together and save Sure Start Centres for the families they are there to help.
With that precise aim we have produced a new pamphlet entitled ‘Sure Start, What Future?’, containing reflections on the enduring value of Sure Start and how we can keep it alive over the next five years.
The launch event for ‘Sure Start, What Future?’ will be held on 14 July at Parliament, in the Grimond room at 7pm.
Many of the contributors to our pamphlet will be speaking on the night, including:
- Tristram Hunt MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Education
- Sharon Hodgson MP, Shadow Minister for Education
- Catherine West, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green
- Graham Allen, MP for Nottingham North
- Charlotte Brady, Sure Start User and Campaigner
- Helen Berresford, Head of Public Affairs at 4Children
